Donna Summer Disco Party at City Hall – A Boston Celebration

Boston once again brought the groove to City Hall Plaza with the return of the beloved Donna Summer Disco Party — a lively tribute to the city’s own “Queen of Disco,” the legendary Donna Summer. Born LaDonna Gaines in Boston’s Mission Hill neighborhood, Donna Summer rose to international fame with disco classics like “Hot Stuff,” “Bad Girls,” “She Works Hard for the Money,” and “Last Dance.” This annual event honored her music, her legacy, and her impact on pop culture and Black excellence.

A Night to Remember

Now in its 11th year, the Disco Party was hosted by Mayor Michelle Wu and the City of Boston’s Office of Tourism, Sports & Entertainment. The event was free and open to the public, transforming City Hall Plaza into a full-blown retro celebration.

Highlights from the Event

  • DJ Vince 1 kept the crowd dancing all evening with a mix of Donna Summer’s greatest hits and other disco favorites.

  • A colorful roller-skating rink gave partygoers a chance to skate under the glow of lights and a giant disco ball.

  • Live performances featured Donna Summer’s sister, Mary Gaines Bernard, and her nephew, artist O’Mega Red, bringing even more heart and soul to the celebration.

  • The plaza was filled with bubbles, glow sticks, sequins, and disco outfits — people came ready to dance, shine, and honor a hometown icon.

The Donna Summer Disco Party wasn’t just a night of music — it was a joyful expression of unity, creativity, and pride. Locals and visitors alike gathered to celebrate a Boston native who made history. With easy access via public transportation, many attendees took the T to Government Center, while others arrived early to grab skates and claim a spot on the rink. The energy was contagious — a true summer highlight in the city.

Carrying the Legacy

Donna Summer’s influence continues to inspire generations. As a five-time Grammy winner, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, and one of the first Black women featured on MTV, her legacy lives on — especially here in Boston, where her journey began. The Donna Summer Disco Party 2025 was more than just an event — it was a reminder of the power of music, community, and celebrating the artists who shaped our world.
